7 Songs that Best Describe the First Family Trip

I know the firsts generally suck, but everyone says you have to start somewhere. To get you through your first family trip I have compiled a list of songs that best describe how you might be feeling. When the going gets tough these tracks will let you know you are not alone. We’ve all been there – if it makes you feel any better – we often still are.

learn from your first

I say forget your first. They tend to suck. Just think: first kiss, first job, first car… Why should the first family trip be any different?

You are still getting the hang of things.

We all learned by trial and error until we got a proper kiss, the dream job and a car. And eventually a great, never perfect family trip.

So, savor the firsts – there be none like it ever again. That is easier said then done, right. I know – been there. To get you through the first trip with your kids, I have compiled a list of songs that best describe what you might be going through.

Here’s a photo from our first family trip. Just remember looks can be deceiving – trust me, it wasn’t just smiles and sunshines. Read our 6 ridiculous mistakes we did on our first family trip.

7 songs that best describe the first family trip
1. help! The Beatles

Were they traveling with kids when they wrote this family trip anthem?

Help!
Help! I need somebody,
Help! Not just anybody,
Help! You know I need someone, help….

If you catch yourself going for this song, relax and convince yourself that travel with kids is the best way to travel.

2. i will survive, gloria gaynor

Of course you will and you will come out of it stronger and your next family trip will be a piece of cake. It does get better.

Oh no, not I
I will survive…

And don’t forget no matter what you are singing this song somewhere great, you aren’t stuck at home.

If you need help picking your next destination – maybe we can be of some help.

3. WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD, louis armstrong

Yes, there will absolutely be moments when it will all seems perfect. They just might not last for long. Make sure you enjoy them, because they are the ones that count.

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

Keep coming back for more. Kids learn so much by traveling. In my opinion despite it all it’s the best gift you can give your family.

4. thriller, michael jackson

Look, the nights can be tough. I won’t sugar coat it. When the kids are tired and cranky you might just feel Michael Jackson had them in mind when he sang:

‘Cause this is thriller, thriller night
And no one’s gonna save you from the beast about to
Strike
You know it’s thriller, thriller night…

My tip: when the kids are really young, try to maintain some routine – get them to catch some sleep in the car, go to the place you are staying earlier – so you’ll skip on seeing something. The sacrifice is usually more than worth it. Try putting them to bed on time… do whatever so they never get too tired. And if they do – keep calm, be gentle and don’t do anything but help them fall asleep.

5. welcome to the jungle, guns n’ roses

Despite the previous tip, the thing that works best for us is to loosen up the routine. We get a bit more crazy: we eat sweets and ice cream, but we start the day with fruit, we don’t go to bed on time but we do sleep in and get up when we feel like it, we go to a museum, but then we spend hours on the beach, we don’t miss a playground…

Welcome to the jungle we’ve got fun and games
We got everything you want honey, we know the names
We are the people that can find whatever you may need

If you feel the same way, enjoy the few times you can be a fun parent and it’s OK to let go…

6. LET IT GO, IDINA MENZEL

Come on, you’ve heard it a million times. Your kids might still be listening to it:

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You’ll never see me cry…

This is my mantra when we head out and I get all uptight. I sing this to myself and take a couple of deep breaths (and a glass of wine) – that does the trick.

7. The Bare Necessities, disney

I don’t know where I took a turn and how I got from Guns N’ Roses to Disney, but here it goes:

Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife

And just have fun – you are lucky to have each other and to be able to travel. Family trips are a privilege, from the first one on.

Oh and you are welcome – you can’t get these songs out of your head now 🙂
