Photo Friday: Beaches of Grado

Grado can be found in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy, on the Adriatic coast. It is often referred to as the “Golden Island”, due to the sandy beaches facing the South, but it’s connected to the mainland by a bridge. It stands in a unique lagoon and already the drive to the town will inspire you, with many small islands and the variety of wildlife.  You can stop to enjoy the The Foce dell’Isonzo Regional Nature Reserve along the way, which offers stunning views and a host of possible activities.

We however decided to hit the beach first and then do the rest. But when you bring kids to the beach you can’t expect to be done very quickly. In the end all of saw of Grado with its Venetian style historic town center were miles of sand and sea. I can’t complain though. It was just about perfect, breathing in the salty air, feeling the sand beneath my feet, picking seashells and chasing my kids around. It probably doesn’t get any better than that.

We loved it and will definitely come for a visit again and then do a more extensive exploring of the neighborhood. We will also include the stop at Aquileia, an ancient Roman city, which was once one of the world’s largest cities and is still one of the main archaeological sites of Northern Italy. The kids were asleep in the car as we were driving through. Thus giving us an additional reason to come back.

I just hope the beaches don’t enchant us again…

Though a visit to the beach was just what we needed to realize:

Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.”
